On Scalability in Sensor Networks

Three complementary approaches to scaling sensor networks up in the number of nodes and in energy efficiency are surveyed. Imaging Sensor Nets provide a massively scalable architecture for sensor networks with tens of thousands of nodes. Distributed Beamforming provides a gain in energy efficiency proportional to the number of nodes collaborating in the beamforming. Biased Resource Allocation provides a framework for scaling multihop sensor nets, combining in-network processing with joint routing/scheduling strategies that bias against connections that take up too many network resources.
